Design Matters (3): Ingenious board game tile holder and embodied memory

Ingenious is the name of the game – it’s good.

The design feature shown here is such a simple thing: you are allowed 6 tiles in your hand, and the tile holder has space for exactly 6 tiles.

In The Design of Everyday Things Don Norman calls this a constraint: where the design of something forces users to adopt the correct behaviour. Players have less of a need to remember the rule because it’s embodied in the plastic.
