Listening to Suo Gân evokes a nostalgia for 1930s Shanghai* almost as strong as the nostalgia I feel for the 1980s Hong Kong of my childhood** … or 1920s London… or late 40s New York… or Singapore in the 50s…
Apart from being wonderful, these nostalgias remind me (1) that nostalgia is as much about itself as it is about actual people and places we actually knew, and (2) that one day we’re all going to feel just as nostalgic about now.***
