Recommendation: Philip Marris on the Theory of Constraints

  • Organisations inevitably have unbalanced capacities
  • There is always a constraint somewhere in the system
  • One hour lost on that constraint (the bottleneck) is an hour lost for the whole system and can’t be recovered
  • One hour gained on a non-bottleneck is an illusion (and can in fact cause damage)
  • A dual view is necessary – we need to apply different rules to constraints and non-constraints
